Title: Why Climate, Why Now – The AIA National Resolution on Climate and How that Affects Design and Construction
Qualifiers for NC Licensed General Contractors are required to complete 6 hours of approved elective continuing education. This is a two (2) hour elective class.
Description: Participants will be presented with a comprehensive accounting of the impacts of human caused climate change primarily found in the US Government’s Fourth National Climate Change report, with graphic evidence of the impacts on human populations presented to support the science. The course will include an examination of the AIA 2030 and 2040 goals with an overview of how architects and contractors will need to address issues of Energy, Materials, Design and Health and Resilience. Numerous programs are now being required by clients who wish to meet voluntary sustainability goals, as well as sustainability goals required by codes and other jurisdictional agencies.
Additionally, AIA documents will be discussed where sustainability programs will be incorporated and will look at the liabilities which can be incurred by both Architects and General Contractors if not clarified during the contract negotiations. Building Codes will be discussed as the means to level the playing field for all contractors for all projects while meeting the goals for a zero net carbon future.
Finally, we will look at some of the initiatives globally which are addressing the challenges of redefining every aspect of our interface with our planet, the use of its resources and care of life support systems.
