About Richard

Richard Nickel

Richard was born April 29, 1976, in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He was the son of Richard Scott Nickel and the late Marjorie Brailsford Nickel. Richard graduated from Calhoun Academy, had an Associate’s Degree in Engineering, and was President of Carolina Bridge Company, Inc. He was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church of Cameron. 

Richard was an esteemed member of the CAGC Family. For years, Richard was a valuable member of the SC Bridge Committee, the SC Design Build Committee, and the CAGC/SCDOT Joint Committee. At the time of his death in March 2020, he was serving out the final year of his two-year stent as Chairman of the CAGC Highway Division/Chair of the CAGC/SCDOT Joint Committee. He leaves behind his father, two children, a brother, and several extended family members. 

At the request of Richard’s family and with the generous support of many CAGC members and friends, the Richard Nickel Scholarship was established in April of 2020 and will be available beginning in 2021.

Application Requirements

 Application should include:
  • One page application that will include school information, degree information, GPA, and industry experience.
  • Full One page essay – “How are you going to make South Carolina & the construction industry better?”
  • Industry-related reference letters (not family/friends)

Selection Process:

  • Three person committee with a CAGC Staff Liaison will review applications and then set up Zoom (virtual) interviews with qualifying applicants.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a SC resident and attend school in South Carolina
  • Must be pursuing a degree in construction (construction management, construction trade certification)
  • Second year student (Freshmen will not be considered at this time)
  • GPA qualification: 3.00+
  • Although, not required, construction internships are preferred.
