Every day, CAGC members walk onto construction sites with one goal in mind – get the job done safely. Each year Safety Week is a show of force, an opportunity for people, companies, and even competitors, to work together and celebrate the incredibly hard work by people in our industry who make safety the foundation of everything they do.
All the resources you need to celebrate Construction Safety Week and recognize the OSHA National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction can be found on their respective webpages.
CAGC is proud to highlight the activities our members are hosting this week to raise awareness and promote safety on their jobsites across North Carolina and South Carolina. If your company is participating in Safety Week, please send us a description of your event along with pictures and we will highlight you on our website and social media. Please email your description and photos to Jacob Garmon at jgarmon@carolinasagc.org.
May is also Mental Health Awareness Month. Carolinas AGC is proud to partner with AGC of America to offer our members resources for mental health and suicide prevention. Recent studies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have found high rates of adults struggling with mental health or substance use and many seriously considering suicide. The construction industry has the highest rate of suicide at 53.2 per 100,000 U.S. workers. That rate is four times greater than the national average and five times greater than that of all other construction fatalities combined.
In honor of May's designation of Mental Health Awareness Month, we will be holding a Lunch and Learn for our members on Creating a Mentally Healthy Construction Culture. We recognize that mental health in the construction industry is prevalent and affects not only the individual but the families, friends, co-workers, and the organization as a whole. This online seminar will focus on building a work environment that supports the human side of emotions because that is the beginning of creating a healthy construction industry culture.

CAGC has also partnered with Vince Hafeli, President of Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, who has dedicated over 38 years of his life to the construction industry. Vince was almost a part of that statistic, and now he is on a mission to change the culture of the construction workplace. He is an international speaker, author, and advocate for mental health and suicide awareness in the workplace. Currently, Vince is working toward a Doctor of Business Administration to further his research and training skills related to suicide in the construction field, while developing approaches to increase support for worker’s mental health needs. CAGC is honored to host Vince as our 2024 Annual Convention keynote speaker, and he has provided our membership with a TEDx Talk where he discusses Mental Health & Suicide in the Construction Industry. This video, along with many other additional resources, can be viewed on the Carolinas AGC Safety page.
