About the Course
This presentation is for general contractors and trades who are new to mass timber and either want to pursue this type of construction or find themselves getting requests to bid projects. It is intended to provide a base level of knowledge as well as guidance for construction professionals who want to further expand their expertise. In addition to market trends and building code advancements, we’ll provide an overview of mass timber products and other materials commonly used in hybrid buildings, such as concrete or steel lateral force-resisting systems. We’ll discuss nuances of mass timber that require unique approaches, and best practices that are key to project success. Attendees will be introduced to the growing body of resources available to GCs and trades on topics such as installation, connections, equipment, safety, and efficiency. Resources will include both online content and available hands-on training through various partnerships and locations across the United States.
Learning Objectives:
- Compare commonly used mass timber building systems in the U.S. and how the design process differs from projects built with other materials.
- Discuss the benefits of mass timber construction and the impact of evolving building codes, including carbon reduction and fire safety.
- Identify project planning, coordination, and design topics that translate into successful buildings for both the design and construction team, including the integration of trades and how mass timber’s structural versatility can reduce labor costs.
- Explore best practices for interaction between the manufacturer, design team, and preconstruction manager that can lead to cost efficiency and safety on site.
