New Continuing Education Requirements for License Renewal
The NC Licensing Board for General Contractors now requires 8 hours of continuing education to be completed annually in order to renew a license. At least one qualifier for licensees in the license classifications of Building, Residential and Unclassified must complete the 8 hours of CE. For the Unclassified license, it must be the qualifier who has passed the building examination.
The 8-hour course requirement includes a mandatory 2-hour course taught by instructors certified to teach this course. The remaining 6 hours will be elective courses produced by Board approved providers.
Professional Engineers May Use GC Continuing Education Courses As Credit Towards PE Education Requirement
Professional Engineers required to complete 15 hours of continuing education each year may choose to use the general contractor courses offered by CAGC as credit towards their PE requirement. However, each activity or course must have a purpose or objective which will help maintain, improve or expand your PE skills and knowledge relevant to your field of practice and each licensee must make that determination on their own.
Note: What are some examples of courses/activities that will require acceptable explanation, if audited, of how it maintained, improved, or expanded the skills and knowledge relevant to the licensee's field of practice?
- Business (unrelated to the practice of engineering/surveying)
- Accounting
- General office management
- Leadership
- Continuing education related to other licenses, professions and trades (e.g. real estate, home inspector, contractor, etc.) unless clearly applicable to engineering/surveying
- Language
