Sloan Construction Company Wins Best Highway-Heavy Pinnacle Award
Improvements to the Interchange of US 176 and Interstate-585 at Spartanburg, South Carolina
Contractor : Sloan Construction Company, Inc., Duncan, South Carolina
Sloan’s $36 million project involved:
- over 7 miles of urban road widening;
- replacing the Valley Falls Road overpass over US 176;
- replacing the I-585 bridges over Business I-85;
- building two new I-585 bridges over East Campus Blvd. and
- two ramp fly-over bridges for the new east Campus Blvd. exchange.
SCDOT called this project “one to brag on.”
The owner highly commended Sloan’s value engineering efforts for the overwhelming traffic switch issues-- but one of our judges expressed the project’s complexity much more colorfully. He said: “the I-585 Phase 1b would be like paving a street inside the Daytona Speedway during the Daytona 500.”
The road work alone involved:
- Almost 400,000 cubic yards of excavation;
- 54,000 square feet of MSE walls;
- About 40,000 linear feet of storm drain and curb & gutter; and
- 194,000 tons of asphalt.
The permanent bridge construction work involved:
- Over 1 million pounds of reinforcing steel;
- 1,700,000 pounds of structural steel girders; and
- 4,000 cubic yards of concrete.
This massive 33-month project was completed ahead of its original schedule and on budget. The improved US 176-I-585 and its I-85 and East Campus Blvd. Exchanges provide a new “front door” not only to the USC Upstate campus but to the City of Spartanburg itself.
