Grads Give SBE Training Academy High Marks
The innovative
Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Contractor Training Academy held
its second recognition of completion program at the Carolinas AGC office in
Charlotte May 11. Fifteen students were awarded certificates and gifts for their
accomplishment in completing this ten-week program.
The SBE Contractor Training Academy is a 10 week training program provided
through a partnership of Hunt Construction Group, RJ Leeper Company, Lockman-Brooks
Marketing Services, Carolinas AGC, Metrolina Minority Contractors’ Association,
and the City of Charlotte Office for Small Business Development, as part of the
SBE plan for the Charlotte Arena Project. Utilizing experts in business
accounting, legal, and construction job management provides participants the
skills that are essential for managing a competitive construction business in
today’s market.
Students involved found this to be a comprehensive and constructive course.
“Construction is such a monster and there’s so much to know,” says graduate
Michelle Grier, MAKK Services Unlimited. “When you’re a small business, it’s not
often you get the opportunity for one-on-one, individual instruction. Until now,
I’ve never had the chance to ask questions that seem small but are big to me. I
have a new understanding of how to do business.”
Fellow grad Curtis Ray, AAA Cleaning Techs, LLC, agrees:
“I learned so much…the language of contracts, how to avoid the pitfalls, the
contract law, the scheduling of duties. I’ve learned the structure and mindset
in which to help my business grow. When small business-owners start out, we are
the chef, cook and bottle-washer; and when we want to grown we still think we
should be hands-on for everything instead of delegating responsibility. I would
recommend this program to anyone who owns a business, regardless of whether they
have a big or small company.”
