The CAGC Safety & Health Committee met on June 24th for their quarterly meeting.  It was greatly attended and the Committee was able to update each other on a wide range of topics.  Lee Peacock with NC Dept of Labor/OSH gave an update report on NC DOL activities.  He reported NC had recorded 12 fatalities so far in 2021.  He estimated that NC is on pace to have a lower number of fatalities in 2021 than 2020. He also reported that their department has received over 4,500 COVID-related complaints.  He also shared they had completed 878 inspections for the current fiscal year which is very close to how many were completed in 2020.

Sharon Dumit gave an update report on SC DOL activities.  She reported that SC has recorded 2 fatalities so far in 2021.  One was an electrocution, and the other was a caught between.  She also mentioned they are seeing a lack of awareness on who the competent person is on jobsites and are working to improve that statewide.  SC OSH is also fully staffed and has begun using drones for some inspections when available.

Roger Richards shared with the Committee a recent article on recent trench fatalities in NC/SC and the committee discussed how to raise awareness and always be vigilant when working around trenches.  He also mentioned seat belt use on equipment and a recent local fatality due to non-use; the committee then shared ways of raising awareness on this issue.  The committee also held a round table discussion on the COVID-19 vaccine and the ways companies are dealing with the issues related to it.

Finally, each member present was given the opportunity to ask questions or report on recent issues they had experienced.  Discussions were had on East Carolina University work zone safety study and portable rumble strips being implemented in work zones.  Bill Stricker also gave an update on Work Zone Traffic Control Supervisor Classes along with other education opportunities.
