Best HIGHWAY-HEAVY Project Category - (2 Awards Given)
Improvements to the Interchange of US 176 and Interstate-585 at Spartanburg, South Carolina -read story
Contractor: Sloan Construction Company, Duncan, SC
Sloan’s $36 million project involved:
- over 7 miles of urban road widening;
- replacing the Valley Falls Road overpass over US 176;
- replacing the I-585 bridges over Business I-85;
- building two new I-585 bridges over East Campus Blvd. and
- two ramp fly-over bridges for the new east Campus Blvd. exchange.

This project is a perfect example of how a job doesn’t have to be really big to rate an A+ from our Pinnacle judges. As SCDOT put it: this project is one of the few truly high-caliber, highly context-sensitive design transportation jobs in South Carolina.

The Single Sisters House at Salem Academy and College, Winston-Salem, NC - read story

This Historic National Landmark, erected in 1785 to house unmarried women in the Moravian community, had been declared unsafe in 2002. Salem College vowed to save the oldest building in the nation continuously associated with the education of women, which is also the oldest building on any college campus in the state of North Carolina. The restoration involved a three-year planning and construction process.
