The Raleigh Convention Center, Skanska/Barnhill Earn top industry honors

CHARLOTTE — February 2010 — The Raleigh Convention Center in Raleigh, NC, has earned a 2009 "Best Building Project" Pinnacle Award from Carolinas Associated General Contractors (AGC). Skanska USA Building, Durham, NC and Barnhill Contracting Co., Raleigh, NC performed as construction managers at risk on the project.

This $222 million project, completed in just over three years, represents the largest construction project the City of Raleigh has ever undertaken and is the city's first building to track for LEED® certification.

To fit into Raleigh's pedestrian-friendly atmosphere, the design team had placed the exhibit hall and 17 loading docks well below ground. Portions of the building are actually situated under three busy urban streets, and required construction of concrete and steel bridges to carry the street traffic.

The annual Carolinas AGC Pinnacle Awards, the most prestigious recognition in the Carolinas construction industry, are given for outstanding achievement in the commercial construction industry.
