WILSON CONTRACTOR EARNS TOP INDUSTRY HONORS FOR WORK ON NC 98 BYPASS AT WAKE FOREST
Contractor: S. T. Wooten Corporation, Wilson , NC
CHARLOTTE –February 2007 – Wilson, NC-based S. T. Wooten Corporation has received the 2006 Carolinas Associated General Contractors (AGC) Pinnacle Award for “Best Highway-Heavy Project” for its work as prime contractor on t he NC 98 Bypass at US 1 in Wake Forest , NC .
This project involved widening, drainage, grading, paving, signals, structures and culverts, and construction of a new 4-lane divided facility. In addition, construction of a new Single Point Urban Interchange was required, including a two-span bridge.
Challenges included delays of right-of-way acquisition, major utility conflicts, design revisions, addition of unplanned water and sewer utilities, revised signal plans, and multiple environmental issues. Wooten overcame these difficulties by conceiving, designing and constructing a solution previously untried in North Carolina highway construction: an innovative earthwork overland conveyor system to move material over Richland Creek and US 1. The result: major savings of time and money, and significant acceleration of the schedule.
The Best Highway-Heavy Project award was presented to S.T. Wooten Corporation at the Carolinas AGC Annual Convention in St. Thomas , Virgin Islands , January 26, 2007 .
As the largest AGC chapter in the nation with 3,000 member firms, Carolinas AGC's mission is to build its members' businesses through workforce development, business development, profit management, and CompTrust AGC –a self-insured workers' compensation trust. More than 75% of commercial and industrial construction (buildings, highways/bridges, utility facilities) in both North and South Carolina is performed or supported by Carolinas AGC members.
