CHARLESTON CONTRACTOR EARNS TOP INDUSTRY HONORS FOR I-26 & ASHLEY PHOSPHATE RD. INTERCHANGE
Contractor : Banks Construction Co., Inc., Charleston , SC
CHARLOTTE –February 2007 – Charleston-based Banks Construction Company has received the 2006 Carolinas Associated General Contractors (AGC) Pinnacle Award for “Best Highway-Heavy Project” for its work as prime contractor on the interchange of Interstate-26 and Ashley Phosphate Road in Charleston , SC.
This three-year project involved removing and replacing two bridges (the Ashley Phosphate Road bridge over I-26 and the US 52 flyover bridge), widening I-26, and adding 2 lanes to Ashley Phosphate Road-- all while preserving the heavily-traveled existing traffic lanes during daylight hours. Complications included massive overhead and underground utility relocation along the entire length of the project.
Banks Construction took the initiative to base the project on collaborative buy-in of SCDOT, design engineers, contractors, local government, utility companies, local businesses and the community itself. The successful schedule completion was also made possible by compressing the original separate work phases into simultaneous time frames.
The Best Highway-Heavy Project Award was presented to Banks Construction Company at the Carolinas AGC Annual Convention in St. Thomas , Virgin Islands , January 26, 2007 .
As the largest AGC chapter in the nation with 3,000 member firms, Carolinas AGC's mission is to build its members' businesses through workforce development, business development, profit management, and CompTrust AGC –a self-insured workers' compensation trust. More than 75% of commercial and industrial construction (buildings, highways/bridges, utility facilities) in both North and South Carolina is performed or supported by Carolinas AGC members.
