NC MUSEUM OF LIFE AND SCIENCE AND NEW ATLANTIC CONTRACTING EARN TOP INDUSTRY HONORS
Contractor: New Atlantic Contracting, Inc. , Winston-Salem , NC
CHARLOTTE –February 2007 – The North Carolina Museum of Life & Science- Bioquest Two in Durham , NC has earned the 2006 “Best Building Project ” Pinnacle Award from Carolinas Associated General Contractors (AGC). Winston-Salem-based New Atlantic Contracting performed as construction manager on the project.
This extraordinary project expanded an existing museum into an adjacent rock quarry abandoned in the 1920's, opening up a whole new dimension of life and science learning. New Atlantic constructed habitats for bears and wolves with man-made rock and water features, an inhabited wetland area, manmade sailboat pond, animal holding facilities, and a boardwalk descending a 26-foot cliff. The project also included two visitor centers, parking lot expansion, and an all-new entrance to the Museum.
Working in a wetlands environment presented daily challenges, and special permitting from the Army Corps of Engineers represented only one of the 10 separate permits the job required. Not a single hour of Museum operation was lost during the construction process.
The Best Building Project award was presented to New Atlantic Contracting at the Carolinas AGC Annual Convention in St. Thomas , Virgin Islands , January 26, 2007 .
As the largest AGC chapter in the nation with 3,000 member firms, Carolinas AGC's mission is to build its members' businesses through workforce development, business development, profit management, and CompTrust AGC –a self-insured workers' compensation trust.
