BANKS CONSTRUCTION COMPANY WINS BEST HIGHWAY-HEAVY PINNACLE AWARD

Interchange of I-26 & Ashley Phosphate Road , Charleston , SC
Contractor : Banks Construction Co., Inc., Charleston , SC

This 3-year project involved 2 challenges: removing and replacing 2 bridges (the Ashley Phosphate Road bridge over I-26 and the US 52 flyover bridge) and widening I-26; plus adding 2 lanes to Ashley Phosphate Road . Meanwhile, the heavily-traveled existing traffic lanes had to be preserved during daylight hours. Complications included massive overhead and underground utility relocation along the entire length of the project: water, sanitary sewer, electric, telephone, cable television and communications, and natural gas. Banks also had to maintain the entire existing traffic signal system and existing drainage system, which involved 6 hundred new drainage boxes and 11 miles of new storm drainage pipe.
