North Carolina Museum of Life & Science—Bioquest Two, Durham , NC

This extraordinary undertaking expanded an existing museum program into an adjacent rock quarry abandoned in the 1920's. The project involved habitats for bears and wolves with man-made rock and water features, an inhabited wetland area, manmade sailboat pond, animal holding facilities, and boardwalk descending a 26-foot cliff. Working in a wetlands environment presented daily challenges, and special permitting from the Army Corps of Engineers represented only one of the 10 separate permits the job required. The owner's unique and far-reaching vision was realized, without a single hour of Museum operation lost.
