HUB CONTRACTORS LEARN BUSINESS DYNAMICS
Carolinas AGC, in collaboration with the Universities of North Carolina, the NC Institute of Minority Economic Development and the Small Business Technology Development Center , recently graduated 8 students from the Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUB) Contractor Business Academy . The Academy provides overall business training to small and minority owned construction professionals to help them get ahead in the industry.
At a September 14 ceremony, held at the McKimmon Center in Raleigh , graduates were presented with certificates of completion. The 8 graduates, out of a 23-student class, are: Timothy Cooke, LPS Security Systems; Anthony Gilbourn, Jabba Construction; Dennis Harris, Freeman and Associates; Terrence Johnson, CableDotSat; Garland Jones, Jones & Jones Construction; Carolyn Myers, Unlimited Concrete; Tammy Northern, T&T General Construction; and Lonnie Ward, Eco Janitorial. Sam Hunter, President and CEO of T A Loving Co. and Senior Vice President of National AGC presented the certificates.
Students had already taken advantage of the networking opportunity the classes provide. Five members of the class united to form a new construction company, aptly named Academy Construction.
Thank you to CAGC member firms Clancy & Theys Construction, Skanska, Affiliated Engineers, Centex, Gilbane, Bovis Lend Lease, and R N Rouse for sponsoring the program so that businesses could participate that otherwise could not afford this kind of intensive training.
Originally, the Contractor Business Academy was developed by Carolinas AGC's as a 10-week program meeting one night per week to teach small contractors the business of running a construction company. At the request of the Universities of North Carolina, the program was redesigned and a five-week blueprint reading portion was added.
