Carpentry Level 1

  • Covers configuration, composition, and application of nails, fasteners, and adhesives used in the carpentry trade.
  • Wood Building Materials

  • Covers both wood and manufactured wood products, methods of manufacture, and applications.
  • Floor Systems

  • Provides a comprehensive overview of floor systems, including components, designs, installation, assembly, and use.
  • Wall Systems

  • Covers the design of stud walls, masonry walls, post and beam walls, and drywall installation.
  • Site Preparation

  • Covers site preparation, property dimensions, site orientation, set back, terrain, squaring a building, and batter board.
  • Concrete and Reinforcement Materials

  • Covers the composition of concrete and reinforcing materials.
  • Concrete Handling and Placing

  • Describes the proper methods for handling and placing concrete.
  • Forming Foundations and Flatwork

  • Introduces forming terms, parts of forms, and describes the procedures for use.

Carpentry Level 2

  • Special Floor Systems

  • Describes bow and bay window floor framing. Covers the use of pans, corrugated metals, reinforcing, concrete, precast, prestressed, and cast in place concrete floors.
  • Wall Systems, Tilt Up

  • Covers methods of testing concrete, placing and finishing concrete, placing and finishing concrete slabs, forming a panel, and pouring, lifting, and stripping panels.
  • Roof Systems

  • Introduces tables on the rafter (framing square), roof construction, and explains the methods for cutting roof members.
  • Reading Plans and Elevations

  • Covers reading and interpreting construction drawings as well as project elevations and specifications.
  • Field Engineering Principles

  • Covers basic field engineering, including locating property with the government land survey system.
  • Forming

  • Covers how the pressures of concrete affect forms and parts of forms, form designs, and the construction of formwork.
  • Water and Damp Proofing

  • Covers water and damp proofing, control and provisions for ventilating, and the control of air infiltration.

Carpentry Level 3

  • Stair Construction

  • Identifies stair parts and types, explains correct stair dimensions, and practical techniques for stair layout rough framing methods.
  • Reinforcing Concrete

  • Explains types and uses of reinforcing bars, mesh and screen and procedures for reinforcing footings, slabs, and walls.
  • Patented Forms

  • Covers the difference between a job built and patented forms, explains differences between available forms, and identifies form parts and uses.
  • Interior Finish: Ceiling Systems

  • Covers ceilings systems, installation techniques for suspended ceilings, ceiling tiles (new and replacement), and gypsum board and plaster ceilings.
  • Exterior Wall Finishes

  • Explains exterior wall finish work, including placement and hanging of windows, siding, flashing for wall, floors, chimneys, and insulation.
  • Roofing Applications

  • Covers asphalt, fiberglass, wood shingles, wood shakes, corrugated metal and slate roofing, chimney saddles, and metal shingles. A special section covers safety in roofing.
  • Installation of Cornices, Gutters, and Downspouts

  • Covers installation of cornices and their components, gutters, and downspouts.

Carpentry Level 4

  • Introduction to Supervision

  • Covers motivation and peer relations, planning, scheduling, and working with other trades.
  • Finish Stairs

  • Presents finish stairs, trim parts, and proper installation.
  • Laser Instruments

  • Covers proper use and safety procedures for laser surveying equipment used by carpenters.
  • Supplement to Ceiling Systems

  • Covers special ceilings, pan ceilings, integrated ceilings, and drywall suspension systems.
  • Metal Studs and Drywall

  • Covers metal framing members, gypsum wall and ceiling products, and drywall and rock lath applications.
  • Interior Finish: Doors and Windows

  • Identifies types of doorjambs and frames. Covers assembly techniques, interior and exterior doors and installation procedures, and door and window trim.
  • Wall and Floor Specialties

  • Covers finish wall coverings and installation techniques, interior moldings, specialty floors such as hardwood, vinyl, and carpeting.
  • Cabinetry

  • Covers parts, woodworking joints, fasteners, and laminates.
